Your Breastfeeding Journey: From Leaking Nipples to Late-Night Feeds

Jun 26, 2025 | Life New Mom

Breastfeeding is natural, but not the easiest. This is why we are here to make it a lot easier for you mama!

Whether it is milk leaks in public, sore nipples, or that lonely 2am feed, many first-time mums quickly realise breastfeeding is a journey. Some love it. Some dread it. Some do both on the same day. And that is okay.

This is not about doing it perfectly. This is about walking through it, one feed at a time.

Let us start with the awkward bits

Nobody tells you how leaky your boobs can be. You may soak through shirts, bras, and bedsheets. Breast pads will become your new best friend. Keep extras everywhere, in your bag, car, bedside drawer.

Latching is not always automatic

Some babies latch easily. Others need help. If your baby is struggling to latch or it is causing you pain, reach out to a lactation consultant or midwife. Sometimes it is a simple positioning fix.

It might hurt, at first

Tender nipples, engorgement, and shooting pains are real. Nipple balm can help. Cold compresses between feeds, too. If it becomes unbearable, seek help. Pain is common, but it should not last forever.

Fed is best. Always.

If you switch to formula, mix feed, or pump instead of nursing, do not feel guilty. What matters is that your baby is fed and you are sane. There is no gold medal for suffering in silence.

Breastfeeding hunger is wild

You might be starving all the time. That is normal. Keep healthy snacks and a water bottle nearby. Breastfeeding burns calories and drains energy, nourishing yourself too.

The emotional side is real

You might cry during a feed. Or feel touched out. Or resentful. Then feel guilty. That emotional rollercoaster is normal. Talk to someone. Vent. Take breaks. This journey is yours, you do not have to love every moment to be a good mum.

Mama, breastfeeding is not just a physical act, it is emotional, raw, and personal. However you choose to feed your baby, you are doing a beautiful job. FTMA stands with you, bottle or boob.
